Slieve Aughty Centre is now certified GOLD by Ecotourism Ireland!
Back in 2011, we began the long journey to Ecotourism Ireland certification and were awarded Silver status, to be upgraded upon completion of The Three Towers Eco House and Organic Kitchen. With the official opening of The Three Towers in November 2012, the Gold award was received as promised, and we are delighted to finally be officially recognised for our eco-friendly, environmentally sound practices.
So what does GOLD certification mean? It means that Slieve Aughty has undergone a stiff audit for all it’s environmentally sustainable practices, cultural awareness, and support of local businesses and resources. For years, the centre has carefully recycled everything, grown it’s own food, avoided harmful chemicals on the land, and encouraged guests to interact with nature. Ecotourism Ireland, the Irish certifying body, is dedicated to protecting the environment and benefiting local communities by helping companies minimise their environmental impacts and recognise and gain from the advantages of being green. Their training and certification standards are very high and they are one of the 14 companies recognised by Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria.
